Digital transformation is shaping society in unprecedented ways, impacting the way we interact, work and play. This transition towards the digital world, which takes concrete shape through virtual/augmented reality and the concept of metaverse, offers opportunities for growth and access to information, facilitating connection between people regardless of geographical distance. However, widespread adoption of technology brings with it significant challenges.

In the seventh episode of Disruptive Talks, we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a conversation that crossed the boundaries between reality and virtual with one of the experts in the field of digital innovation on the Italian market: Fabio Lalli. With over twenty years of experience behind him, Fabio, founder and partner of IQUII and IQUII Sport and creator of MTVRS, led us through the intricacies of the Metaverse, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), revealing the their potential and technical and social challenges.

He shared his unique insights, gained through years of experimentation and activity in the tech sector, offering a detailed overview of the emerging trends that are redefining the world of business and society itself. We discussed the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in the current era of digital transformation.

The conversation led us to analyze the comparison between the latest technological solutions, such as Meta Quest 3 And XReal 2, and to understand how these devices shape user experiences within increasingly sophisticated digital worlds. Furthermore, we addressed the important issue of the techno-social duality of the Metaverse: a technology capable of bringing individuals together but, at the same time, creating new forms of isolation.

At the heart of the episode, our dialogue focused on understanding how the Metaverse and various forms of virtual, augmented or mixed reality are shaping an increasingly concrete and pervasive digital future. With this journey into innovation, Disruptive Talks confirms itself as a point of reference for all those who wish to actively participate in the debate on how technology is influencing our present and shaping our tomorrow.

If we are passionate about exploring emerging technologies, we are even more passionate about investigating their consequences on society and human beings. Artificial intelligence, considered by many as one of the technologies with the highest transformative potential, is at the center of our study in this discussion which addresses numerous topics, which we hope will awaken the curiosity of many of you...

Marco Terribile, our colleague at CETIF Advisory in the role of Team Leader and Consulting Manager in AI/Data Analytics, is an engineer with a marked humanistic interest. He shared with us his many reflections on the evolution of AI, our relationship with it and its ethical and practical implications.

Thanks to his experience and curiosity, we were able to discuss a wide range of topics: generative AI, human and AI-generated creativity, our relationship with artificial intelligence (collaboration or cannibalization?) and the possible technological singularity, as well as the links between AI and quantum computing. We also touched on topics related to science fiction, philosophy, and other issues related to physics and reality, such as simulation theory.

Overall, this conversation was a real immersion into the AI universe. It has given us a deep look into the implications and innovations of AI, challenging our minds and challenging our beliefs. It doesn't matter if you're already an AI expert or new to this field, this podcast episode will give you new perspectives and a deeper understanding of this fascinating and complex topic.

Quantum computing, where are we?

In 2023, the field of quantum computing is evolving with significant advances in both fundamental research and the development of practical applications. Here is a summary of the situation:

Research and development

  • Spin wave manipulation: Physicists have demonstrated the ability to control spin waves on chips using superconductors, potentially offering new ways to build quantum computers.
  • Improved semiconductor materials: A new class of supermic semiconductors has been discovered that promises greater efficiency and speed, potentially improving the creation and management of qubits.
  • Quasiparticles in ultracold gas: Scientists have observed quasiparticles in ultracold quantum gases, helping to better understand complex processes in solids.
  • Silicon carbide acoustic resonators: Systems have been developed to measure the stability and quality of acoustic resonators, which could be used in quantum technology.

Practical applications

  • Encryption: there have been significant experiments in using quantum algorithms to improve communications security.
  • Machine learning: The application of quantum computers to handle the computational load of machine learning is being explored, although the widespread practice may require further development.
  • Scientific simulations: In science, quantum computers are used to more precisely simulate complex molecular systems, which could lead to breakthroughs in materials and pharmaceuticals.
  • Graphene and quantum computing: Although there are challenges, graphene is being explored as a promising material for improving the accuracy and efficiency of qubits in quantum computers.

Estimation for revolutionary applications

Estimates for when the first truly revolutionary applications of quantum computing will become widespread vary. Many experts believe that we are still in a period of “narrow quantum supremacy,” where quantum computers outperform classical computers in specific, highly specialized tasks. However, the horizon for broader and more revolutionary applications may still require a decade or more of research, development and commercialization.
